Few venues in Edinburgh can match the scale, history, or atmosphere of the Edinburgh Playhouse.
Standing proudly at the top of Leith Walk, the Playhouse is the largest theatre in Scotland and one of the busiest touring venues in the United Kingdom.
Today, it hosts major West End productions, large-scale musicals, comedy shows, concerts, and special events, drawing audiences from across the UK.
Whether visitors come for a blockbuster musical or a one-night performance by a famous comedian or musician, the Playhouse remains one of the city’s premier entertainment destinations.
Edinburgh Playhouse – From Super Cinema to Theatre
The Playhouse opened in 1929 as a grand cinema during the golden age of picture palaces. Designed by architect John Fairweather, the building was created on an impressive scale, with a vast auditorium, elegant Art Deco influences, and seating for thousands.
At a time when cinema-going was one of Britain’s favourite pastimes, the Playhouse offered audiences a luxurious experience. Its enormous auditorium, decorative interior, and state-of-the-art facilities made it one of Scotland’s finest cinemas.
As cinema attendance declined during the latter half of the twentieth century, many large picture houses disappeared altogether. The Playhouse, however, found a new role. Rather than being lost to redevelopment, it was transformed into a major live-performance venue, ensuring the building remained at the heart of Edinburgh’s cultural life and leading naturally into its theatre legacy.
The Largest Theatre in Scotland
With seating for more than 3,000 people, the Edinburgh Playhouse is the largest working theatre in Scotland. Its size allows it to host productions that many other venues simply cannot accommodate, making it a natural fit for major touring shows.
Major touring musicals regularly stop in Edinburgh as part of UK and international tours. Productions such as The Lion King, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Hamilton, and Mamma Mia! have all attracted huge audiences to the venue.
The theatre’s scale, extensive backstage facilities, and large stage make it one of the most important touring houses outside London.
A Key Part of Edinburgh’s Theatre Scene
While venues such as the Festival Theatre, King’s Theatre, Traverse Theatre, and Lyceum Theatre each occupy their own place within Edinburgh’s performing arts landscape, the Playhouse has a unique role. It is the city’s home for large-scale commercial theatre and blockbuster productions, complementing the city’s wider theatre scene.
