Edinburgh International Book Festival
Every August, the Edinburgh International Book Festival brings writers, readers and audiences from around the world to the city.
Novelists, poets, historians and public figures gather in Edinburgh to share stories, discuss ideas and take part in conversations about books, culture and current events.
Launched in 1983 with a modest line-up, the festival ballooned into one of the world’s biggest literary gatherings.
Nobel laureates, Booker winners, and headline-makers have all graced its stages, from cosy author chats to heated debates and packed-out talks.
Set against the Fringe’s exuberant pace, the Book Festival offers a celebration of ideas, literature and debate.
Here, audiences dig into everything from politics to climate change, tech to identity, showing up for sharp conversation and fresh perspectives, not just book signings.
The festival champions reading and creativity for everyone.
Its outreach work and family activities pull in crowds of all ages, with the children’s programme now a must-see for families from across Scotland and beyond.
Edinburgh International Book Festival – New Venue
For years, Charlotte Square’s tented village was the festival’s beating heart—a relaxed oasis of bookshops, cafés, and spontaneous writer encounters beneath leafy Georgian trees.
Now, the festival has a new home at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, set in the former Royal Infirmary. The move signals a new era—one aiming for flexibility, ambition, and a year-round cultural anchor.
The new venue blends old stone with high-tech spaces, drawing the Book Festival nearer to universities and cultural hotspots.
Today, the festival draws a global crowd and stands as a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar. It cements Edinburgh’s reputation as UNESCO’s first City of Literature, a place where ideas and debate matter.
Whether catching a star speaker or stumbling on a new writer, visitors find the festival captures Edinburgh at its best: thoughtful, literary, and always curious.
- The festival site is open daily from Saturday, 15 August to Sunday, 30 August, from 09:30 to 23:00.
